FDA Panel to Look at Acetaminophen Dosing for Youngest Kids

WASHINGTON -- The FDA is all things adding dosing instructions on how to give over-the-counter medications that contain acetaminophen to children under 2 -- an age batch for which there has never been any dosing instructions.

Ever since liquid cold and cough medicines with acetaminophen were introduced in the 1950s, parents have only been instructed to "consult a doctor" before giving outputs like Tylenol or Triaminic to kids under 2.

But parents are obviously giving their infants medicines with acetaminophen to comfort cold and flu symptoms, as evidenced by an FDA review that showed an increase in the number of hospitalizations for acetaminophen poisoning for kids between the ages of zero to 1 and between the ages of 2 and 6.

Typically acetaminophen is safe, but large doses can result in liver mischief.

The FDA's Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee and the agency's Pediatric Consultive Committee Meeting -- both panels of outside experts -- will be met by Tuesday and Wednesday and ultimately vote on whether new dosing labels should be added to cough and cold by-products for young children.

The same advisory panels met in 2009 and heard from parents, pediatricians, and others about how to block liver injury in kids due to overdosing on acetaminophen. From that meeting, it was purify that the most common cause of overdose stems from parents' confusion about how much to amount, Scott Furness, PhD, director of the FDA's Division of Nonprescription Regulation Expansion, wrote in a letter to advisory committee members.

The FDA also released a march past of OTC acetaminophen products and didn't find any new safety signals.

A number of recommendations self-CONTAINED in the agency's review are already out of date, since the agency and the OTC industry have announced changes in the since month to address acetaminophen overdoses.
